For almost 30 years Urban Youth Ministries has been serving youth and communities in need. Over the years we have grown not only in size, but also in reputation and in our ability to reach the students who need us most. We were founded in the early ‘90s when a few committed believers saw a great need for an organization with a holistic approach. Our focus is reaching kids and introducing them to Christ and walking with them through life. We do this by partnering with other similarly aligned organizations and ministries to offer a ray of hope to Denver’s “at-risk” students.
Today, we carry out our vision of growing a new generation of leaders who will expand the kingdom of God by touching one life at a time. Using camps, retreats, adventure programs, and outreach events, we spread the gospel to many who could easily fall through the cracks and show them what can happen when they find faith.
A Different Kind of Youth Group
Urban Youth Ministries isn’t like any other organization. We are volunteer-driven; bringing kids together with leaders who come from the communities they live in and understand the challenges they face every day. We currently impact an average of 500 students annually with our weekly ministry activities. Currently, we have two full-time staff members and over 30 volunteers. Many of our current volunteers are former students who have grown up in our program and have come back to become mentors for the next generation!
We provide opportunities for kids to grow in their relationship with God through adventures that they normally wouldn’t get the chance to try. Obstacle courses, backpacking trips, white water rafting, and horseback riding are just a few of the activities that we’ve been able to offer students. These activities challenge them in new ways and aid them in developing confidence in themselves and their relationship with God.
Spiritual Multiplication
“You did not choose me, but I chose you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last.” John 15:16
God has chosen us to bear fruit. As God’s chosen instruments we have a huge challenge before us. Our goals are to reach kids with the good news of Jesus Christ that other programs do not focus on, to give Denver’s urban students a chance to realize their dreams, and to spread hope throughout communities in our part of Colorado. We know that miracles can happen, because we see them every day! There is nothing more important than showing young people how to have a better life and a brighter future.
Our desire is to see people become more fruitful and have “ministries of multiplication!” We want to help equip youth for a lifetime and lifestyle of ministry.
Urban Youth Ministries Statement of Faith
The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible, God’s infallible written word, the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that it was uniquely, verbally, and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit and that it was written without error (inerrant) in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks. 2 Tim 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21
We accept those areas of doctrinal teaching on which, historically, there has been general agreement among all true Christians. Because of the specialized calling of our movement, we desire to allow for freedom of conviction on other doctrinal matters, provided that any interpretation is based upon the Bible alone, and that no such interpretation shall become an issue which hinders the ministry to which God has called us. We explicitly affirm our belief in basic Bible teachings, as follows:
God the Father
- The One True God: There is one true God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality. Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19
Jesus Christ
- The God-Man: Jesus Christ is God, the living Word, who became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. Hence, He is perfect Deity and true humanity united in one person forever. Matthew 1:18-25 John 1:1 John 14:8-11, Col1:15-17, Col 2:9
- Died for Our Sins: He lived a sinless life and voluntarily atoned for the sins of men by dying on the cross as their substitute, thus satisfying divine justice and accomplishing salvation for all who trust in Him alone. 1 Cor 15 :3, Col 1:19-20, Titus 2:14, Hebrews 4:15, Hebrews 9:27-28, 1 John 2:2
- Resurrected from Death: He rose from the dead in the same body, though glorified, in which He lived and died. Luke 24:3-7, Romans 14:9, 1 Corinthians 15:4
- Mediator in Heaven: He ascended bodily into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, where He, the only mediator between God and man, continually makes intercession for His own. Mark 16:19, Acts 2:32-36, Romans 8:34,1 Tim 2:5, Hebrews 7:25
- The Second Coming: Jesus Christ will come again to the earth – personally, visibly, and bodily – to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. Matthew 16:27, Mathew 24:30-31, John 14:1-4, Acts 1:10-11, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, Heb 9:28, Revelation 1:7, Revelation 22:12
- Head of the Church: Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, His Body, which is composed of all men, living and dead, who have been joined to Him through saving faith. Ephesians 1:22-23, Col 1:18
The Holy Spirit
- The Indwelling Spirit: The Holy Spirit has come into the world to reveal and glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to men. He convicts and draws sinners to Christ, imparts new life to them, continually indwells them from the moment of spiritual birth and seals them until the day of redemption. His fullness, power and control are appropriated in the believer’s life by faith. John 14:16-17,26; John 16:7-15; 1 Cor 3:16; Ephesians 1:13-14; 1 John 2:27
- The Power of the Spirit: Every believer is called to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit so that he will not fulfill the lust of the flesh but will bear fruit to the glory of God. Acts 1:8, Romans 7:5-6, Romans 8:12-14, Galatians 5:16-17, 22-25
Humanity
- The Fall of Man: Man was originally created in the image of God. He sinned by disobeying God; thus, he was alienated from his Creator. That historic fall brought all humanity under divine condemnation. Man’s nature is corrupted, and he is thus totally unable to please God. Every man is in need of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:27, Isaiah 53:6a, Psalm 14:3, Isaiah 59:1-2, Romans 3:23, Romans 5:18-21
- Gift of Salvation: The salvation of man is wholly a work of God’s free grace and is not the work, in whole or in part, of human works or goodness or religious ceremony. God imputes His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, and thereby justified them in His sight. Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9, 1 Peter 1:3-5
- Assurance of Salvation: It is the privilege of all who are born again of the Spirit to be assured of their salvation from the very moment in which they trust Christ as their Savior. This assurance is not based upon any kind of human merit but is produced by the witness of the Holy Spirit, who confirms in the believer the testimony of God in His written Word. Titus 3:3-7, 1 John 5:11-13
- Fellowship: God admonishes His people to assemble regularly for worship, for participation in ordinances, for edification through the Scriptures and for mutual encouragement. Proverbs 27:17, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, Romans 12:4-8, 1 Corinthians 12:25-27, Galatians 6:2, Philippians 2:1-4, Hebrews 10:24-25
- Death: At physical death, the believer enters immediately into eternal, conscious fellowship with the Lord and awaits the resurrection of his body to everlasting glory and blessing. But at physical death the unbeliever enters immediately into eternal, conscious separation from the Lord and awaits the resurrection of his body to everlasting judgment and condemnation. Mathew 13:40-43, Mathew 25:31-46, John 5:24-30, 1 John 2:24-25, Revelation 20:11-15
- The Great Commission: The Lord Jesus Christ commanded all believers to proclaim the gospel throughout the world and to disciple men of every nation. The fulfillment of that Great Commission requires that all worldly and personal ambitions be subordinated to a total commitment to “Him who loved us and gave Himself for us.” Mathew 28:18-20
Code of Conduct
Within UYM, we hereby agree to make the goal of our ministry to help fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord (Matthew 28:19, 20), sharing the love of Christ from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith (1 Timothy 1:5). We will, through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13), strive to fulfill our commitments, conducting ourselves as an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). As servants of Christ, we will always seek to be found trustworthy in our relationship with God (1 Corinthians 4:1-2).
